Go on for miles

Story told by Sny Horn
My mother was born and raised in Snye; that’s how I got the nickname.
But I was born in Buffalo because my father was an ironworker.
About halfway through grade one, he brought us back to Snye. My mother and father had a farm there and lived off the land.
They had gardens that go on for miles. Or at least, when you’re a kid, it seems that way.
We had a few horses, a few cows, some chickens, and pigs. In the fall just before Christmas, they would butcher a pig and a chicken for a big supper.
My grandmother was a seamstress and so every year, she would pluck all the feathers and use them to make pillows. She would hem your pants and fix your dress till the day she died. She was so smart.
Maybe once a month, we would get on a boat and go right across the Saint Lawrence River to Glen Walter, Ontario. We would go over there for macaroni, lunch meat, things we didn’t have on the farm.
We did that for a few years and then we moved to Brooklyn.
